Similarweb in real projects: uses and limits

I have used Similarweb in three different contexts: an agency evaluating prospects before a proposal, a client who wanted to “spy” on their direct competition, and a project of my own where I needed a quick traffic figure for a report. In all three cases the tool worked, but never in the way people expect when they open it for the first time.

The commercial report case: estimates that don’t add up

The most common use is by agencies and consultants who need to size up a domain before a meeting. You open the profile, see “total visits,” “average duration,” and “pages per visit,” and you put it into the proposal. The problem appears when you compare that figure with the client’s real data.

In one specific project, Similarweb estimated traffic figures for a mid-sized ecommerce site that were notably higher than what Google Analytics showed. The difference wasn’t a rounding issue: the client’s dashboard included internal traffic, bots, and sessions that the tool cannot distinguish. The practical lesson is that Similarweb measures panel estimates, not first-party analytics. It serves to order magnitudes, not to assert exact figures.

Comparing competitors: useful for trends, dangerous for figures

Where it does add value is in the analysis of relative trends. If you want to know whether a competitor grew or fell over the last six months, the visits curve is usually coherent even if the absolute number is off. I have used that feature to detect traffic drops in rivals during algorithm updates and to see which countries were gaining weight in their geographic mix.

What to look at and what to ignore

  • Useful: proportion of direct traffic versus organic search, monthly evolution, country mix, referral sources.
  • Unreliable: exact visits, average duration, bounce rate, and pages per session on small sites.

According to the provider’s own official documentation, the data is built from user panels, partner data, and statistical models. That explains why domains with a lot of mobile traffic or with audiences outside the usual panels show larger deviations.

The common mistake: using Similarweb for niche domains

A mistake I see repeated is consulting the tool for a local business or a niche website with few visits. There the data usually appears empty or with estimates so rough that they don’t allow you to draw conclusions. It’s not a problem with the tool: it’s that its methodology needs volume to estimate. For small projects, the real alternative is Search Console, your own data, or keyword tools, not a traffic panel.

When NOT to use Similarweb

It doesn’t work for auditing the real performance of your own site, for calculating conversions, or for justifying advertising investment with precision. Nor does it replace a technical audit or a log analysis. Its best fit is the research phase: sizing up a market, comparing trends between rivals, and preparing questions before a call. If you need verifiable data, the source should always be your own analytics or the data from the site owner.

Practical conclusion

Similarweb is a compass, not a stopwatch. It helps you get your bearings on the size and evolution of a domain, but any figure you’re going to present as definitive should be cross-checked. In my experience, the real value lies in relative comparisons and in detecting patterns, not in the absolute number that appears at the top of the profile.
