How to repair the entire Windows 10/11 system without losing your files
🤯 If your Windows is a disaster: errors when opening programs, weird blue screens, extreme slowness, or things that simply won’t load… don’t give up just yet. There’s a way to fix it ALL without formatting and without losing your stuff.
Option 1: Reinstall over the system with a Windows ISO (without losing files)
This is the most powerful option. Basically, you reinstall Windows on top of the one you already have, and it keeps your programs, files, and settings.
Steps:
- Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s official website.
- Choose “Upgrade this PC now” or save the ISO and open it from the system.
- When the installer starts, select:
- ✅ “Keep files and apps”
And let Windows repair itself. It will take a while, but it’s worth it. You won’t lose anything.
Option 2: Use a previous restore point
If an update or change broke the system:
- Press Shift + Restart to enter the recovery environment.
- Go to Troubleshoot > System Restore.
- Choose a point before the problem started.
This also preserves your files.
Option 3: Repair from CMD (if Windows won’t boot)
From a USB or recovery environment:
- Enter CMD as we saw earlier.
- Use:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
If the disk is damaged:
chkdsk C: /f /r
You can also restore the boot as we saw earlier if that’s the problem.
What if I don’t have a USB or can’t get in?
From another PC, you can create a bootable USB with Microsoft’s tool. You only need a flash drive of at least 8GB.
In another article, we’ll see how to do it step by step 🧠
In all these cases, you won’t lose personal files. So before formatting everything, try these options ✌️
