YouTube ReVanced: what nobody tells you before installing it

Why 90% of ReVanced problems come from a wrongly applied patch

If you’ve just discovered YouTube ReVanced and are thinking about installing it, the first thing you need to know is that most of the failures you’ll see discussed in forums (playback errors, unexpected crashes, «not loading,» or a black screen) are not client bugs, but rather the consequence of patching the wrong APK or using the manager with a version of YouTube that isn’t the right one. According to the project’s official documentation, ReVanced Manager is only compatible with the recommended version of YouTube listed in its repository; installing the APK from the Play Store without downgrading is the number one cause of the «Unable to apply patch» error.

Real advantages over the official app

What you will actually notice from day one

  • Background playback: audio keeps playing with the screen off without needing Premium. It’s the most addictive feature and, in practice, the one that drains the most battery if you overuse it with OLED screens off for hours.
  • No ads in the feed or mid-video: it works well in 95% of cases, but it’s not infallible. YouTube has started serving server-side ads (SSAI) on some devices, and those can slip through even with the patch active. It’s not your fault.
  • Optional patches: SponsorBlock, Return YouTube Dislike, persistent search bar, hiding Shorts, or forcing maximum resolution. You can enable them separately.
  • No dependency on Google Play Services during the installation process: although the final app does need microG to sign in.

Disadvantages and limitations you should accept before starting

The microG and notifications problem

Here’s the point almost no tutorial mentions: even if you install microG, YouTube push notifications in ReVanced don’t arrive reliably. On devices with aggressive battery management (Xiaomi, Samsung with One UI, OnePlus), microG goes to sleep and you miss subscription alerts. There’s a setting to exclude it from optimization, but it’s still not as stable as the official app. If you rely on YouTube for live stream or specific channel alerts, this is a real limitation.

Manual updates and patch breakage

Every time YouTube releases a new version, the ReVanced team takes anywhere from days to weeks to adapt the patches. During that time, if you update the app by mistake (or if the system does it automatically), you can end up with a client that crashes on opening. It’s a cycle that repeats itself and requires keeping an eye on the repository. There are no silent Google Play updates here.

Security and account risks

Signing in with your Google account on a modified client goes against YouTube’s terms of service. In practice, there’s no public record of mass bans for using ReVanced, but the risk exists and each user assumes it. Additionally, downloading APKs from sources other than the official repository (revanced.app) or the project’s GitHub is the most common route for adware infection. If a site offers you a «pre-patched ReVanced Premium,» be suspicious: the project doesn’t distribute precompiled APKs as a matter of legal policy.

How to avoid the most typical failures (no hype)

  1. Before patching: uninstall the version of YouTube you have. Then install the recommended version (the base APK). If you don’t downgrade, Manager will fail.
  2. «Not loading» or infinite spinner: it’s almost always outdated or improperly linked microG. Reinstall microG from the official repository and sign in again.
  3. Black screen on opening: you’ve applied patches to an unsupported version. Go back to the recommended version.
  4. Video downloads: the built-in download patch is limited; for actual downloads you need external tools, and you should check the legality according to your country.

Who is ReVanced NOT for?

If you’re an iPhone user, forget it: there’s no official equivalent version. If you need absolute stability, reliable push notifications, and don’t want to fiddle with technical settings every few weeks, the official app with Premium is still more convenient. ReVanced is a solution for those who accept manual maintenance in exchange for control over the experience.

Practical verdict for beginners

ReVanced is worth it if you value background playback and ad blocking, and if you’re willing to follow the recommended versions from the repository. It’s not an «install and forget» solution: it’s a living client that depends on a community. According to the project’s own documentation, compatibility is limited to specific versions and support is offered through its official channels, not on third-party websites promising magic APKs.
