Delete a Page in Word in 2026: Stop Wasting Time Like This

Most people delete a page in Word by hammering the Backspace key like it’s a whack-a-mole machine. And then they wonder why the blank page at the end keeps coming back. I’ve seen this in offices, in university theses, in legal contracts. It’s not that Word is broken. It’s that you’re fighting the wrong thing.

Here’s the hard truth: a page in Word doesn’t really exist. Pages are just a visual result of how text, paragraphs, tables and section breaks fall on the sheet. So when you delete a page in Word by selecting everything and pressing Delete, you’re often leaving behind the invisible culprit: the page break or the paragraph mark that keeps pushing content down.

Why deleting a page in Word fails (and nobody tells you)

Click the paragraph symbol in the Home tab (the ¶ icon) or press Ctrl + Shift + 8. Suddenly the document fills with dots, arrows and little labels like «Page Break» or «Section Break (Next Page)». That’s the real document. Everything you see there is what’s actually creating the blank page you’re trying to remove.

If you delete a page in Word without turning on those formatting marks, you’re basically cleaning a room with the lights off. You might get lucky, but usually you just move the mess around. The most common culprits are: manual page breaks, extra empty paragraphs at the end, and section breaks inherited from a template or a copied document.

Another classic: a table that runs to the very bottom of the page. Word needs a paragraph mark after a table, and if that paragraph lands on the next page, you get a blank page you literally cannot delete by selecting text, because there’s no text there. The fix is to select that final paragraph mark and set its font size to 1 point, or reduce the table row height by a hair.

The fastest way to remove a page in Word on desktop

If the page has content, put the cursor anywhere on it. Then press Ctrl + Shift + End if it’s the last page, or Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow if it’s in the middle, and hit Delete. That’s the clean shortcut to remove a page in Word when there’s real text involved. Nothing fancy, but it works.

For a blank page at the end, don’t select anything. Place the cursor right at the end of the last character on the previous page and press Delete repeatedly. Each press kills one paragraph mark or one page break. The page collapses and disappears. If it doesn’t, you’re dealing with a section break, and that changes everything.

How to delete a blank page in Word with a section break

Section breaks are stubborn. If you place the cursor before one and press Delete, Word sometimes merges the formatting of both sections and wrecks your layout: margins change, headers vanish, page orientation flips. That’s the collateral damage nobody warns you about.

The safer route is to go to View → Navigation Pane, click the Pages tab, select the thumbnail of the blank page, and then delete the section break from there after turning on formatting marks. Or better: change the section break type from «Next Page» to «Continuous» in Layout → Breaks. That usually removes the blank page without destroying anything else.

I’ll defend this position: for long documents, the Navigation Pane is not optional. It’s the only way to see the structure of the document and remove a page in Word without playing Russian roulette with your formatting.

Deleting a page in Word Online: same idea, different limits

Word Online is not the desktop app. It doesn’t show section breaks the same way, and some layout options are locked. If you’re trying to delete a page in Word Online, select the content of that page, press Delete, and then check for page breaks by turning on formatting marks from the Home tab. If the blank page survives, download the file and open it in the desktop version. There’s no shame in it. Word Online is fine for quick edits, but for structural surgery, the desktop app wins.

One more thing about Word Online: it sometimes hides trailing empty paragraphs that the desktop app shows as page creators. So a document that looks clean online can still have a phantom blank page when you print it. Always verify in Print Preview.

Three habits that save you from this mess forever

  • Never press Enter to move to a new page. Use Ctrl + Enter for a page break, or better, apply a Heading style with «Page break before» in the paragraph settings.
  • Turn on formatting marks every single time you need to delete a page in Word. It takes one second and saves ten minutes.
  • Use section breaks only when you actually need different headers, margins or orientation. Everywhere else, they’re just landmines.

And if you’re working with a thesis or a contract, do yourself a favor: check the end of the document after every major edit. Blank pages accumulate silently, and by the time you export to PDF, you’ve got three of them ruining your page count.

The real problem isn’t the page, it’s the invisible formatting

People search for «how to delete a page in Word» expecting a magic button. There isn’t one. Word doesn’t think in pages, it thinks in flows. Once you accept that, everything gets easier. The blank page you want to remove is almost always a symptom, not the disease.

So stop deleting text randomly. Turn on the paragraph marks, find the break, kill it, and move on. That’s the whole trick. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the difference between a clean 2026 document and one that makes your editor cry.
