Bluetooth Not Showing in Windows 10 or 11? Fix It in 2026

If Bluetooth has vanished from your Windows 10 or 11 laptop, you are not losing your mind. I have spent the last few weeks digging through tech forums, Reddit threads and Microsoft’s own support pages, and the same story keeps popping up: Bluetooth not showing up after a Windows update. It is a nasty bug, but it is almost always fixable without buying new hardware.

Here is the blunt truth: Windows does not «lose» Bluetooth on purpose. What happens is that a driver gets corrupted, a background service shuts down, or the radio gets disabled at firmware level. The fix depends on which one of those three things is actually broken, so let’s go through them in order, from the easiest to the most annoying.

First: Does Your PC Actually Have Bluetooth?

Sounds dumb, but a lot of people waste hours reinstalling drivers on a machine that never had Bluetooth in the first place. Older desktop towers and cheap custom builds often ship without a Bluetooth chip. If you assembled your PC yourself, check your motherboard specs before you do anything else.

Open Device Manager by pressing Win + X and picking it from the menu. Look for a section called Bluetooth. If it is not there, expand Network adapters and look for anything with «Bluetooth» or «Wireless» in the name. No Bluetooth entry anywhere? Your hardware simply does not have it.

In that case, grab a USB Bluetooth 5.3 dongle for around 10 to 15 euros. They work out of the box on Windows 10 and 11, and they are honestly more reliable than some built-in Intel chips from 2018.

Quick Settings: The Obvious Thing Everyone Skips

Windows 10 and 11 both hide the Bluetooth toggle behind the notification center. Click the speech bubble icon in the bottom right corner (next to the clock), and look for the Bluetooth tile. If it is grey, click it. If you do not see it, hit Expand to reveal the full grid.

On Windows 11, you can also go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices. If the main toggle is off, turn it on. If the toggle is missing entirely, that is your confirmation the driver layer is broken, so move to the next section.

Fix Bluetooth Drivers: The Real Culprit in 90% of Cases

This is the fix that solves the «Bluetooth not showing up in Windows 11» problem for most people. After a cumulative update, Windows sometimes swaps your working driver for a generic one that does not load properly.

  1. Press Win + X and open Device Manager.
  2. Find the Bluetooth section. If you see a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, you have found the culprit.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Update driver > Search automatically.
  4. If Windows says you already have the latest, right-click again and pick Uninstall device. Tick the box that says «Delete the driver software» if it appears.
  5. Restart your PC. Windows will reinstall a clean driver on boot.

If the generic driver keeps failing, go straight to your laptop manufacturer’s website (Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus, whatever you own) and download the Bluetooth driver for your exact model. Intel and Realtek chips have their own dedicated installers too. Do not trust third-party «driver updater» tools, they are mostly adware.

Check the Bluetooth Support Service

There is a background service in Windows called Bluetooth Support Service, and if it is set to Manual or Disabled, Bluetooth will disappear from the UI without any warning. I have seen this happen on corporate machines after IT pushes a policy update.

Press Win + R, type services.msc and hit Enter. Scroll down to Bluetooth Support Service. Double-click it and make sure Startup type is set to Automatic. If the service is stopped, hit Start. Do the same for Bluetooth Audio Gateway Service and Bluetooth User Support Service if you use headphones.

Pro tip: if the service keeps stopping by itself after a reboot, a third-party antivirus or a power management setting is likely killing it. Check your AV’s startup list.

Run the Windows Bluetooth Troubleshooter

Yes, the built-in troubleshooter is basic, but it has saved me more than once. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Bluetooth and run it. On Windows 11, the path is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

It will restart the radio, reset the service and reinstall the driver stack in one shot. Not always successful, but it takes 30 seconds, so why not try it first.

When It Is Actually a Hardware Problem

If you have tried all of the above and Bluetooth still does not show up, there are two possibilities left. One, the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo card inside your laptop has died, which is more common than people think on machines older than five years. Two, the antenna cable that connects the card to the lid got loose, usually after a repair or a drop.

On a desktop, the M.2 Wi-Fi card can also fail. Before you buy a replacement, try a System Restore to a point before the problem started. If that does not bring Bluetooth back, a 12-euro USB dongle is the pragmatic answer. Do not waste 80 euros on a repair shop diagnosis for a chip that costs less than a pizza.

One Last Thing Nobody Tells You

Windows 11 build 24H2 and later has a known bug where Bluetooth disappears if Fast Startup is enabled. Turn it off in Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable, then untick «Turn on fast startup». Reboot. This alone has fixed the issue for a huge number of users on Reddit and Microsoft’s own feedback hub.

If you have gone through every step here and Bluetooth still refuses to appear, your hardware is toast. But nine out of ten times, reinstalling the driver or flipping that Fast Startup switch is all it takes.
