Canva’s AI allows you to create almost any design or visual content with a phrase or a photo. It does this by integrating tools into a workflow that feels like a conversation.
You can ask it things like “design a presentation about renewable energy” or “make a poster for a garage sale”. In seconds, it generates complete templates, not just a single image. If you’re not convinced, you keep chatting with the assistant to adjust it.
You can also upload a photo of yourself and ask it to turn it into an Instagram post with a specific style. The AI applies the design, suggests text, and adapts the format.
Edit photos without knowing Photoshop
The editing tools solve common problems. The most useful one is “Magic Eraser”, which removes objects or people from the background of a photo with a few strokes. It works well for cleaning up images.
Others, like “Magic Edit” (to change or add objects) or “Magic Expand” (to extend the background of a photo), are more unpredictable. You can try changing the color of a shirt in a photo, but sometimes the result doesn’t blend well and the patch is noticeable.
Create videos from scratch or improve them
You can generate short video clips with just a description. You ask for something like “an astronaut cat in space, cinematic style” and the AI creates it, even with audio and sound effects.
If you already have clips, tools like “Beat Sync” automatically sync scene changes with the beats of a song, something that is tedious to do manually.
Write and translate text for your designs
“Magic Write” is a text generator. You ask it to write a LinkedIn caption, a slogan, or to summarize a long paragraph. It’s useful for getting out of creative block, but the text is usually generic and needs your personal touch.
You can also translate all the text in a design into another language with one click.
It helps you if you’re a teacher or have a business
- For education: Generate lesson plans, interactive activities, or class presentations in minutes. A teacher can create an infographic about the solar system without starting from scratch.
- For businesses: It maintains brand consistency. If you connect your “Brand Kit” (logo, colors, fonts), the AI automatically applies them to all the designs it generates for you. You can also resize a design for Instagram and instantly convert it into a Facebook format or a flyer.
The good and the not so good
The most valuable thing is that it eliminates the fear of the blank canvas. It gives you a professional starting point that you just have to customize. You save a lot of time on repetitive design and basic editing tasks.
The limitations:
- The quality of generated images is inconsistent. Sometimes, with characters, the hands or facial expressions come out distorted.
- Many of the most powerful features (unlimited design uses, Pro editing tools) require Canva Pro, which is paid.
- The “Canva style” is unmistakable. Sometimes, the generated designs can seem too generic or recognizable as made on the platform.
