What WhatsApp’s double tick says about your anxiety (and how to stop it).

I’m going to be direct: that double tick blue has screwed up your life more times than you’re willing to admit. And you know it.

I’ve been through it too. You send an important message, the one that took you three tries to write because you wanted to sound natural without seeming desperate. And then the mental movie starts. You see them turn blue. And an hour goes by. Two. Three. Nothing.

That’s when the double check syndrome eats away at your head. It sounds like a disease, and it is, but a doctor can’t cure it. You brought it on yourself.

The worst part isn’t that they don’t reply. The worst part is that you KNOW they’ve read it. Because the app, that bitch, gave you the information. And information, when you can’t handle it, turns into poison.

Before this existed, we lived more peacefully. There was a mystery. The message arrived, sure, but you didn’t know if they’d seen it or if it had gotten lost in the ether of bad signal. Not now. Now you have proof that they’re actively ignoring you .

And be careful, because being ignored isn’t the same as not being able to reply. But the brain, that traitor, always assumes the worst. It always thinks that if there’s no reply it’s because you don’t matter enough to them.

People confuse “read” with “replied”. And they have nothing to do with each other. Just because someone opened the chat doesn’t mean they have to drop their phone and write you a novel that very second. But of course, we’ve already internalized that they do. That it’s an obligation. And when it doesn’t happen, we throw a fit.

I’ve done things I’m not proud of. Like checking the last seen. Or calculating how much time has passed since they read it until now to measure if it’s an “acceptable” amount of time. Read receipts on WhatsApp is what they’re technically called. I call them evidence in a trial I make up all by myself.

The most surreal thing is when you do it with people right next to you. Imagine: you’re on the couch with your partner, you send them a meme from the other end of the living room, you see the two blue ticks, and you get angry because they didn’t laugh out loud. We’re a mess.

Now it turns out WhatsApp, maybe seeing that we’re going crazy, is testing removing the blue color. They say it’s all going to be gray. That you won’t know if they’ve read it unless you go look for the time in the details . And my first reaction was: “what a bummer”. But then I think about it and say, maybe it’s the best thing that’s happened to us.

Because the problem isn’t the tick. The problem is that we’ve turned communication into a long-distance race. Into a constant demand for immediacy. And that’s not life, it’s a sentence.

Some people have the trick of turning off read receipts. And that’s fine. But it’s not the magic solution. Because then you turn them off, but the other person doesn’t. And you’re still in the same loop, except now you’re the one who can’t see if others read your messages.

Message statuses on WhatsApp are like a double-edged sword: they give you information you didn’t ask for and that you then don’t know what to do with.

I’ve learned something over the years: the anxiety that blue tick generates in you isn’t caused by the other person. You cause it yourself. Because you’ve placed expectations on a message that don’t belong to it. You’ve turned a simple “hey, how’s it going” into a test of interest. And of course, if there’s no reply, you fail.

My advice, if you want to hear it, is that you start treating messages like what they are: notices. They’re not contracts. They’re not promises. They’re just words on a screen. Them turning blue only means they’ve seen them, not that they’ve absorbed them, processed them, and decided to reply within your timeframe.

And if they still eat away at your head, do the test. Turn off blue ticks yourself. For a week. See what happens. Maybe you’ll discover that uncertainty is less painful than the certainty of knowing you’re being ignored. Or maybe you’ll discover that the problem was never the tick.
