Start on the Right Foot: 5 Trends You Can Actually Apply

If you’re new to this, the word “trend” can sound like hot air. The reality is simpler: a digital marketing trend is any change in audience behavior or in the tools that is already affecting how people discover, compare, and buy. Your job is not to chase all of them, but to identify the two or three that fit your business and test them with a small budget.

How to tell a real trend from a passing fad

Before investing time, apply this three-question filter:

  • Does it solve a measurable problem? If you can’t define which metric should move (clicks, leads, time on page), it’s not a useful trend for you.
  • Has it been adopted outside your bubble? Just because a speaker talks about it doesn’t mean your customer uses it. According to industry studies, adoption of a technology usually takes between 12 and 24 months to reach small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Can you test it in two weeks? If the answer is no, it’s probably a project, not a trend.

The five trends a beginner can apply right now

1. Conversational search and question-format content

AI assistants and voice searches have pushed search engines to prioritize direct answers. In practice: write a section that literally answers the user’s question in the first two sentences, and develop the nuance afterward. It works on Google and also in AI-generated summaries.

Honest limitation: this doesn’t guarantee you’ll be cited in an AI summary. There’s no way to force it; you can only increase the likelihood with clear, well-structured content.

2. Short video as an entry point, not a destination

Vertical video still captures attention, but the beginner’s mistake is publishing it and waiting for the platform to do the rest. What does work: using video to capture attention and the link in your bio or description to drive to a page with context. It’s a funnel, not an end in itself.

3. Your own email list versus borrowed audiences

Every algorithm change reminds us of the same thing: your email list is the only channel where you don’t depend on a third party. Start with a simple form and a two-email welcome sequence. It’s not glamorous, and it’s still one of the most profitable things you can do.

4. AI automation, but with human review

Generating drafts, summarizing meetings, or classifying leads is already affordable for a small team. One specific mistake I’ve seen repeated: automating customer responses without reviewing the first hundred messages. AI answers confidently about things it doesn’t know, and in customer service that comes at a high cost. Rule of thumb: AI proposes, a person approves.

5. Simple, honest measurement

Analytics tools with consent, imperfect attribution, and cookies in decline. The consequence for beginners: don’t obsess over the last click. Define three or four metrics you can defend to your boss or your client, and measure trends, not isolated spikes.

What not to do when you’re starting out

Don’t open five channels at once. Don’t buy an automation tool before you have a manual process that works. And don’t copy a big brand’s strategy without their team or their budget: what works for them can sink you for lack of volume.

A two-week plan

  1. Pick a single trend from the list and define the metric you want to move.
  2. Spend one week producing three small pieces (three posts, three emails, or three videos).
  3. Review the data at the end of the second week and decide: scale, adjust, or discard.

This method doesn’t promise guaranteed results. What it does do is keep you from spending months on something you were never going to be able to measure.
