How to restore Windows from a previous point (and save yourself without formatting)

🧩 If your computer started failing out of nowhere —after an update, installing something, or for no apparent reason— system restore can be your salvation. Here I explain how to do it easily (and also from CMD if you can’t get into the system).

Option 1: Restore from the Windows graphical environment

If you can still get into Windows, do this:

1. Press the Windows key, type: nginxsystem restore and open “Create a restore point”.
2. In the window that opens, click on System Restore…
3. A wizard will open. Choose a point before the problem started (Windows creates some automatically when you install something important).
4. Follow the steps and let your PC work its magic. It will restart and go back to how it was on that date.

✨ The best part: your personal files are not deleted, only the system changes and programs.

Option 2: Restore from CMD (when you can’t get into Windows)

If you can’t get into the system but you manage to access the recovery environment (WinRE):

1. Go into the advanced options (Shift + Restart, or by forcing 3 shutdowns).
2. Go to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt
3. In the console, type:rstrui.exe

That will open the restore wizard even from recovery mode! Just like the graphical option, choose the restore point and follow the steps.

Option 3: Restore from a bootable USB

If you have your repair USB (like the one we explained in TOPIC 5):

1. Connect the USB and boot from it.
2. On the installation screen, click on “Repair your computer” (bottom left corner).
3. Then go to Troubleshoot > System Restore.

There you’ll be able to access the saved points and restore easily.

What if there are no restore points?

😓 It can happen. Windows doesn’t always create them, and some versions have them disabled.

Enable them now for next time:

1. In the search bar, type “Restore point”
2. Choose drive C:
3. Click on Configure and enable the Turn on system protection option
4. That way Windows will create automatic points in the future.

In summary:

• If you can get into Windows: search for “System Restore”.
• If it won’t boot: use CMD or USB to run rstrui.exe.
• Your files are not lost.
• Enable the points if they’re not enabled for next time.
