Monetizing on TikTok: The Real Guide Nobody Tells You to Actually Make Money

The first thing you need to understand before you start recording

There’s something that caught my attention a while ago when I saw how people talk about TikTok as if it were an automatic money-printing machine. It’s not. But it’s also not as complicated as they make it out to be.

The key to making money on TikTok isn’t having millions of followers. It’s understanding which mechanism to use depending on where you are right now.

With 1,000 followers you can already start making moves using affiliate marketing or TikTok Shop, without waiting to have a huge account. That completely changes the equation for anyone just starting out.

The mistake 90% of people make when trying to monetize TikTok

Everyone rushes to request access to the TikTok Creator Fund as if it were the only path. And then they get the shock of their lives when they see the numbers.

TikTok pays between $0.02 and $0.04 per 1,000 views, which works out to between $20 and $40 per million views. A million views. For 20 euros. Do the math yourself.

Nobody I know lives off that. Nobody.

The creator fund serves one purpose: to give you a little pocket money while you build the income streams that actually scale.

How to monetize TikTok without followers: the link-in-bio method

This is what smart people who don’t have time to wait do.

With 1,000 followers you can already place a clickable link in your bio, which opens the door to affiliate traffic and selling your own products without needing anything more.

The system is simple: you record videos about a specific topic, you put the link in your bio, and you send traffic to a page where the conversion happens. It could be Amazon Associates, it could be your own product, it could be an email capture landing page.

Making money on TikTok without being famous is exactly this. No magic. Traffic with intent directed somewhere where there’s an offer.

TikTok Shop: the tool that’s being ignored the most right now

TikTok Shop lets you create a shopping experience directly from the app, showcasing and selling products through videos and live sessions, without the viewer having to leave the platform.

This is brutal. The conversion rate when there’s no exit friction is very different from sending someone to another website.

I know people who sell mediocre physical products with TikTok Shop and turn over more than many do with Shopify stores they’ve worked on for years. The algorithm favors product content when there’s native purchasing. It’s no coincidence.

Lives: the most underrated path to monetize on TikTok fast

Lives have a bad reputation because people associate them with streamers making fools of themselves. But the business model behind them is solid.

During live broadcasts you receive 70% of what the virtual gifts sent by followers generate; the remaining 30% goes to TikTok as commission. Some gifts can exceed $500 in value.

The most successful live creators schedule their broadcasts regularly, use interactive formats like games or Q&A sessions, and share behind-the-scenes moments to keep attention.

Monetization on TikTok Live doesn’t require you to be a professional entertainer. It requires consistency and that your community has reasons to connect.

Brand collaborations: when they make sense and when they’re a trap

Many brands actively work with micro-influencers, between 10,000 and 100,000 followers, precisely because they have greater credibility and more loyal and engaged communities than massive profiles.

That means you don’t have to wait to be big for a brand to call you. But there’s a huge trap here.

If you accept any collaboration for easy money, your audience will notice within two videos. And when your audience stops trusting you, all the other monetization paths go down the drain. Brand collaborations on TikTok only work long-term if there’s coherence between what you sell and who you are.

TikTok Creator Marketplace is the official platform for connecting brands and creators, where you’ll receive invitations from companies to work on content directly.

Niche is everything: why the topic you choose is worth more than how much you post

There are people posting three videos a day for months and earning nothing. And there are people with 15 videos uploaded who are already selling. The difference isn’t frequency. It’s the niche.

Finance and tech niches have a CPM of between $0.05 and $0.08 per 1,000 views, because they attract banks, fintech platforms, and investment firms with big advertising budgets.

Meanwhile, the pure entertainment niche has a miserable CPM and a young audience that doesn’t buy anything. Note: entertainment isn’t bad, but if your goal is to make money on TikTok with few followers, you need a niche where the people watching you have purchasing power or buying intent.

Personal finance, technology, health, education, business. That’s where the real money is.

The strategy of the creators who earn the most: not depending on TikTok

The most successful creators don’t depend on a single source of income. They use TikTok as a springboard to other opportunities: that’s the smartest long-term strategy.

And it makes all the sense in the world. TikTok can change its algorithms tomorrow, it can ban you, it can disappear from the European market. It already happened with restrictions in several countries. If all your income is inside the platform, you’re vulnerable.

Those who are serious do this: they build an audience on TikTok and then move it to an email list, a Telegram channel, a paid community. TikTok is the entry funnel, not the final destination.

Long-term TikTok monetization means the platform works for you, not the other way around.

TikTok Series: the feature very few people are using yet

With the Series feature you can publish paid video collections for your viewers, create and upload premium content without leaving TikTok, share your knowledge in course format, detailed routines, or step-by-step tutorials.

This is a goldmine for anyone with real knowledge about something. You don’t need to set up an external course platform, you don’t need Teachable or anything like that. You publish a Series inside TikTok, you put a price on it, and whoever wants to watch it pays.

The problem is that very few Spanish creators are using it yet. Which, if you think about it, is a huge opportunity before it gets saturated.

How much you actually charge for sponsorships: the real numbers

Here people exaggerate a lot in both directions. It’s neither as easy as they say nor as hard.

A creator with between 50,000 and 100,000 followers can charge between $100 and $500 per sponsored video, or more if they achieve high reach.

That means that with a mid-sized account, well worked and in a niche with demand, you can generate 1,000 or 2,000 euros a month just with two or three collaborations. No viral hit, no millions of followers.

Some TikTokers report earnings of between $1,500 and $8,000 for a single viral video with 4 million views using TikTok Shop and affiliates combined. It’s not the norm, but it’s not impossible either.

What is standard, however, is that whoever negotiates based on engagement rather than follower count always gets better rates.

The media kit: the tool that separates amateurs from professionals

If you want brands to take you seriously, you need a document that speaks for you before you open your mouth.

The media kit should present who you are, your niche, key stats from your account such as followers, engagement rate and audience demographics, your rates for different types of collaborations, and examples of your best work.

Without that, when you contact a brand you look like an amateur asking for money. With it, you look like a professional presenting a business proposal.

Engagement rate matters more than follower count when you’re negotiating. An account with 20,000 followers and 8% engagement is worth more to a brand than an account with 200,000 and 0.5%.

Why the TikTok algorithm is your best ally if you know how to read it

TikTok content has an average engagement rate of 4.25%, surpassing other platforms. That’s no coincidence. The TikTok algorithm doesn’t distribute content to your followers first, like Instagram does. It tests it with a cold sample of users who don’t know you at all.

If that sample responds well, it amplifies it. That means a new account with good content can compete with a five-year-old account. That doesn’t happen on any other social network.

The TikTok algorithm for creators rewards retention, replay and comments over likes. If someone watches your video twice in a row or leaves a comment even just to argue with you, that’s worth more than a thousand silent likes.

TikTok Pulse: the program almost nobody mentions that pays like YouTube

There’s a TikTok monetization tool that goes completely unnoticed in most guides. It’s called TikTok Pulse and it is, without exaggeration, the closest thing to what YouTube offers with its partner program.

With TikTok Pulse, creators who meet the requirements take 50% of the revenue generated by ads that appear alongside their videos. To access it you need at least 100,000 followers and to consistently rank among the top 4% of most-viewed videos in your category.

It’s not for everyone. But if you already have that volume, ignoring Pulse is leaving money on the table.

If your strength is producing viral content suitable for advertisers, Pulse can be the best option of all those the platform offers. The key is that the content has to be “brand safe”: no controversies, no sensitive topics, nothing that scares advertisers away.

The Creator Rewards Program: what has changed and why it matters

The old Creator Fund was a disgrace. Everyone said so. TikTok knows it and completely overhauled it.

The new Creator Rewards Program pays between $0.40 and $1.00 for every 1,000 qualified views, which is a huge leap compared to the old system that paid between $0.02 and $0.04 for the same number.

That changes the numbers quite a bit. A million views can now be worth between $400 and $1,000, not $20. It’s still not anyone’s main source of income, but it’s now a real supplement.

The program favors videos longer than one minute and uses a formula that combines engagement, search relevance and audience location to calculate what you earn. That means a video well positioned in TikTok search can generate passive income for weeks or months. Exactly like YouTube works.

Retention is everything: why a two-minute video can be worth ten times more

Here’s something people don’t understand until they look at their analytics in detail.

Audience region matters enormously: views from markets with strong advertising investment such as the United States, United Kingdom and Western Europe generate a much higher RPM because advertisers pay more to reach those audiences.

If your audience is mostly Latin American and you want to scale rewards program income, you have a natural ceiling. The solution isn’t to change language, it’s to shift your topic toward niches where the brands that pay more are willing to invest: finance, technology, health.

And if you record in Spanish but your content also attracts Spanish, French or German Spanish-speaking audiences, your RPMs go up on their own.

How to get paid by TikTok in Spain: the tax side nobody explains

This is something people learn the hard way. Especially the first year when the letter from the tax office arrives.

TikTok pays Creator Rewards Program income through Wise or Payoneer, always gross and without tax withholding, which means the creator must issue an invoice, include the payment in their quarterly tax filings and set aside the tax portion before spending it.

And there’s a nuance many are unaware of: invoices to TikTok carry 0% VAT because it’s an intra-community transaction, but live gifts are converted to euros in Payoneer or Wise and are declared as economic activity income with their corresponding monthly invoice.

It’s not optional. It’s mandatory. And if you’re not registered as self-employed in Spain, you can’t legally get paid by TikTok or monetize brand collaborations.

LIVE Subscriptions: the recurring income few creators take advantage of

Live gifts are fine for occasional nights. But what really changes the equation is the subscription model.

Fans can pay a monthly fee to receive exclusive benefits such as custom badges, unique emotes and access to private chats. It’s a recurring and predictable source of income, ideal for building loyalty with your most committed followers.

Recurring and predictable. Those two words together are exactly what almost all TikTok monetization lacks. With 200 subscribers at 5 euros a month you already have 1,000 euros fixed. No virality, no algorithm, no luck.

The model works especially well in niches where people want direct access to you: training, personal finance, fitness, personal development. In those niches people don’t just want to see content, they want to belong to something.

The tax mistake that ruins many creators in the second year

I’ve seen it happen too many times. First year of monetization, all good, you spend what comes in. Second year, the tax office calls.

TikTok pays Creator Rewards Program income thirty days after the end of the month, and TikTok Shop sales fourteen days after order delivery.

The problem isn’t the payment. The problem is that people treat that money as net salary and don’t set aside income tax from day one. In Spain, if you’re under the modules regime or simplified direct estimation, between income tax and self-employment contributions you keep less than half. If you haven’t calculated it from the start, you end up owing what you already spent.

The simple rule: set aside 35% of every payment and don’t touch it. Then you settle up. It’s always better to have extra than to come up short.
