😵‍💫 If your computer turns on but Windows doesn’t load correctly, it gets stuck on a black screen, it throws errors like “Bootmgr missing“, or it restarts on its own… don’t panic. Here’s the trick to bring it back to life.

1. Enter the recovery environment (WinRE)

Quick method if you can still get in:

  • Press Shift while clicking Restart from the start menu.
  • This will open the blue recovery menu.

If Windows doesn’t load, try this:

  • Force shut down and turn on the PC 3 times in a row when you see the Windows logo. This activates the recovery environment.

2. Go to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options

There you will see:

  • Startup Repair
  • Command Prompt
  • System Restore

First we try Startup Repair. If that doesn’t work, we move on to the commands.

3. Use CMD to repair the startup

Open “Command Prompt” and type the following commands one by one:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Each one serves a purpose:

  • fixmbr repairs the boot record.
  • fixboot repairs startup files.
  • scanos searches for installed systems.
  • rebuildbcd rebuilds the boot loader.

⚠️ If any of them gives an error, you can also use:

bcdboot C:Windows

4. Restart and test

After running all of that, close the window and restart. Hopefully, your Windows should start up as if nothing had happened ✨

Extra: what if it doesn’t work?

If it still won’t start even with that, you could try a bootable USB to repair from there (we’ll cover that in another tutorial).
