Algoritmos de redes sociales y alcance orgánico

Configure TikTok so the algorithm shows you more

What most people call “hacking the TikTok algorithm” is, in reality, fine-tuning a series of parameters that the app uses to decide who to show your video to. There’s no magic trick: there’s configuration, retention signals, and account consistency. This guide walks through the exact order of adjustments you can apply today, along with the limitations you should know about before expecting miracles.

Step 1: Set your account identity before touching anything

The recommendation system needs to classify your profile by topic. If you post recipes, memes, and gaming clips on the same account, the initial distribution gets diluted.

What to adjust in the settings

  • Content category: in Settings → Account → Change category, choose the one that best describes at least 80% of your videos.
  • Bio with keywords: include your niche naturally (“easy vegan recipes” instead of “follow me”).
  • App language: if your audience is Spanish-speaking but your app is in English, distribution may prioritize the wrong audiences.

A common mistake I see in accounts I advise: changing the category every week because “it’s not working.” The system needs several consistent posts to consolidate the classification; constantly changing it resets that learning.

Step 2: Set up your account as a professional (Creator) account

Creator mode doesn’t increase reach on its own, but it unlocks the analytics panel, which is where you actually see what retains viewers and what doesn’t. Without that data, any adjustment is a shot in the dark.

Specific settings

  • Enable the professional account from Settings → Account → Switch to business account.
  • Check the metrics for the first 3 seconds in the panel: it’s the signal that weighs most in initial distribution according to TikTok’s official documentation for creators.
  • Tag videos with the promotional content label when applicable: failing to do so can reduce distribution without you noticing.

Step 3: Adjust the metadata the system reads

On TikTok, on-screen text, automatic captions, and audio are processed to classify the video. The configuration matters:

  • Automatic captions enabled: they add processable textual context and improve retention among those watching without sound.
  • On-screen text in the first second: it tells the system and the user what the video is about.
  • Hashtags: use 3-5 relevant ones; generic ones like #fyp don’t contribute real classification, though they don’t penalize you.
  • Description with context: a sentence that describes the content, not filler.

Step 4: Control retention through editing

No configuration adjustment compensates for a video that gets abandoned at second 2. Retention is built in the edit: cut every 2-3 seconds, an immediate visual hook, and an ending that invites rewatching.

A practical example that often goes unnoticed: in videos longer than 30 seconds, placing the ending or conclusion at the beginning and then developing it increases average retention, because the viewer already knows what they’re going to get and sticks around until the end.

Step 5: Timing and frequency without obsessing

Post when your audience is active according to your analytics, not according to generic lists. The minimum frequency that usually works is 3-4 videos per week; below that, the system has too little data to test with.

What this does NOT do

  • It doesn’t guarantee virality: distribution depends on retention signals that are only confirmed once the video is published.
  • It doesn’t replace content that offers no value: the algorithm amplifies what retains, not what exists.
  • It doesn’t work the same for new accounts (fewer than 10 videos): they need volume for the system to classify them.
  • There’s no evidence that using a VPN or changing the device’s region improves reach; official documentation doesn’t support it and it can create inconsistencies in the account.

Transparency matters: TikTok doesn’t publish the exact weights of its recommendation system, so any specific figure you see out there is speculation. What you can control is the configuration, consistency, and retention. Start with steps 1 and 2, measure for two weeks, and adjust based on your own data.
