The other day I was at work, with my laptop connected to the big screen, and suddenly the mouse went crazy. I don’t know if it’s happened to you: you turn the little wheel just a tiny bit and the page flies off like it has wings. Or the opposite, you have to turn it a thousand times to scroll down four lines.

It turns out that Windows, in its infinite wisdom, puts the mouse settings in three different places. No, I’m not kidding. It’s in the Settings app, in the old Control Panel, and if that fails, you have to go into the registry like a hacker in a movie.
What pisses me off is that most people don’t even realize. They go to the Control Panel, see the left or right button thing, and they’re perfectly happy. But the real problem is in that tab that says “Wheel” . That’s where the heart of the matter is.
My colleague Manolo, who thinks he knows everything, told me his mouse was acting up because it was old. And I said to him: “Manolo, it’s not the mouse, it’s that you have it configured so that when you move the wheel it jumps a whole screen instead of 3 lines.” He was blown away.

But watch out, here comes the part nobody tells you: if you have one of those gaming or brand-name mice, like Logitech or Razer, the software they force you to install completely ignores whatever you set in Windows . It happened to me with a Logitech MX Master. I set it to 10 lines in Windows and it did whatever the hell it wanted because its own app had a different setting.
I spent an entire afternoon fighting with it. I uninstalled Logitech Options, and it worked normally again. I reinstalled it, and it went crazy again. In the end I discovered that the “smooth scrolling” or “smart scrolling” option gets written into the registry and there’s no way to get rid of it without deleting the whole program.

Some people tell me they prefer natural scrolling, the one that goes backwards like on a Mac. That’s a whole other can of worms. In Windows you don’t have it right there in plain sight. You have to go into the registry, find your mouse’s VID (yes, that weird identifier) and change a value called FlipFlopWheel from 0 to 1 . A real pain in the ass for something so simple.
And if you think that’s the end of it, just wait. In the latest versions of Windows 11, the “scrolling down scrolls up” thing does appear in Settings, but only in the Canary builds . In other words, in the unstable, test versions. The rest of us mortals with the normal version have to play registry architect.

The worst part isn’t when it goes slow or fast. The worst part is when it doesn’t go at all. There’s a really nasty bug in Windows 11 24H2 that makes scrolling suddenly become super slow, especially in File Explorer . People have tried everything: changing lines, restarting, updating drivers. And the only solution that works for them is unplugging and plugging the USB back in.
I swear I’ve seen people who have to do that every morning as part of their ritual. It’s pathetic. Microsoft has gone months without fixing it. And if you have a Bluetooth mouse, even worse, because you can’t easily “unplug” it.
Another problem that’s driven me crazy is with the middle button. It turns out that now if you hold down the middle button and move the cursor, Windows interprets that you want to do automatic scrolling . A real pain if you use programs like Fusion 360 or any design software where you need that button to move the camera.
Disable automatic scroll windows
You have to go to the mouse properties, look in the wheel tab, and there’s nothing. It doesn’t appear. It’s as if Microsoft had decided for you that you’re going to use automatic scrolling and that’s that. Some mice with their own software let you disable it, but if you have a run-of-the-mill mouse, you’re screwed.
And what about vertical monitors? That’s another level of madness. You have the screen in vertical, configured as vertical in Windows, but the mouse enters from wherever the hell it feels like . You have to go to Display Settings, drag the monitors around as if you were doing a puzzle, and pray that Windows understands that the mouse should enter from a side that makes sense.
This isn’t a Windows 11 thing. It’s been a problem since Windows 98, because people have been putting monitors vertically for years and Microsoft has never done anything to make the mouse behave coherently in those setups.

The conclusion I draw after going around in circles so many times is that mouse settings in Windows are like those grandma’s cupboards: everything’s in there but you have to know where to look. The Settings app gives you the basics, the Control Panel lets you tweak the exact numbers, and the registry is for when you’re desperate and have no other choice.
What really gets on my nerves is that with every Windows update they change where everything is. The wheel used to be adjusted in the Control Panel. Then they put it in Settings. Then they changed it again. And now, if you have Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2, you have to go to the Control Panel no matter what because Settings won’t let you set the exact number of lines .
And I’m telling you all this because I’ve been using computers for years and I’ve fought with this more times than I’d like.
