YouTube keeps a log of everything you search and watch, and that log shapes what lands on your home feed. If you share a TV, a laptop, or a phone with someone else — or you just want the algorithm to stop pushing the same garbage — you need to know how to delete YouTube search history properly. It’s not one single button; there are two separate trails (searches and watch history), and each one has its own kill switch. Here’s the whole map, no fluff.
Why your YouTube search history actually matters
Every term you type into the search bar gets stored in your Google account, tied to your YouTube activity. That data is what YouTube’s recommendation engine uses to decide what appears in «Recommended» and on the homepage.
So if you search «how to fix a leaky faucet» once, don’t be shocked when your feed fills up with plumbing channels for two weeks. Deleting your YouTube search history resets that signal and gives you a cleaner slate.
It’s also a privacy issue. Anyone who grabs your unlocked phone can open the app, tap your profile, hit History, and see exactly what you’ve been searching. That’s the real reason most people want this cleaned up.
Delete YouTube search history on Android and iPhone
The mobile app is where most people do this, and it takes about fifteen seconds. The menu is identical on Android and iOS, so the steps below work on both.
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Tap History. On newer versions it may say «Manage all history» or «Watch history» — same destination.
- You’ll see three tabs: Watch history, Search history, and Comments. Tap Search history.
- Hit the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top and choose Clear search history.
- Confirm. Done.
Want to nuke everything at once instead of just searches? In the same three-dot menu you’ll find Clear watch history, which wipes the videos too.
One underrated trick: in that same menu there’s a Pause watch history option. Turn it on and YouTube stops logging anything until you turn it back on. That’s the move if you want a permanent off-switch without deleting every time.
Delete YouTube search history on your computer
On desktop it’s slightly different because YouTube splits the controls between the YouTube site and your Google account page.
- Go to youtube.com and sign in.
- Click History in the left sidebar. If you don’t see it, click «You» first to expand the menu.
- At the top you’ll find tabs for History, Search history, and Comments. Select Search history.
- Click Clear all search history in the upper-right area, then confirm.
If you only want to remove a few specific entries instead of everything, hover over each item and click the X on the right. Useful when you only want to erase one embarrassing search and keep the rest.
To wipe the full YouTube watch history on PC, go back to the main History tab and click «Clear all watch history.» Same confirmation flow.
Set up auto-delete so you never think about it again
Manually clearing history works, but it’s a chore. Google lets you automate the whole thing at the account level.
- Head to myactivity.google.com and sign in with the same Google account.
- Find YouTube History in the list of activities.
- Click Auto-delete.
- Choose a timeframe: 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months.
Everything older than your chosen window gets deleted automatically, forever, without you lifting a finger. There’s no 1-month option — 3 months is the shortest Google offers, which is a bit annoying but still way better than keeping data indefinitely.
What actually gets deleted (and what doesn’t)
Here’s where people get confused. Clearing YouTube search history only removes the terms you typed into the search bar. It does not remove the videos you watched, the channels you subscribed to, your likes, your playlists, or your comments.
Those live in separate buckets. If you want a truly clean account, you have to clear each one individually — or go to myactivity.google.com and delete the entire YouTube activity record at once.
Also worth knowing: if you use a shared Google account, clearing history on your phone clears it for everyone signed into that account. There’s no per-device split. If you want your own separate history, use a separate Google account or YouTube’s built-in brand account feature.
Real questions people actually ask
Is it deleted permanently? Yes. Once you clear it, it’s gone from your account. Google may take a few hours to propagate the change across all surfaces, so don’t panic if something lingers on one device for a bit.
Will my recommendations reset? Yes — and that’s the point. YouTube’s algorithm loses its signal and starts from scratch. Expect a few days of generic, unfocused recommendations before it learns your taste again.
Can I recover deleted history? No. There’s no trash bin and no undo. Once it’s cleared, it’s cleared.
Does this delete my Google search history too? No. YouTube history and general Google Search history are separate activities. You’d have to clear Google Search separately at myactivity.google.com.
Does pausing history stop ads? No. Pausing only stops logging new entries. Ad personalization is controlled elsewhere, in your Google Ad Settings.
The verdict
If you only remember one thing: search history and watch history are two different things, and clearing one doesn’t touch the other. Handle both, then set auto-delete to 3 months so you never have to do this manually again.
Do it on mobile, do it on desktop, or just let Google handle it automatically. Either way, taking 60 seconds now saves you from a feed full of stuff you don’t want and a history log anyone could read.
